Last week, Wendy Williams called HBCUs and the NAACP racist during a “Hot Topic” segment of her talk show. Her comments did not go over well with the audience nor journalist Roland S. Martin, who called her out on News One. He appeared on Wendy’s show to school her!
Williams was discussing Jesse Williams’ BET Awards speech and criticized his messages of racial empowerment. She stated she would be “offended” that HWCU (Historically White colleges and Universities) existed.
Wendy said, “I would be really offended if there was a school that was known as a historically White college. We have historically Black colleges. What if there was the National Organization for White People, only? There’s the NAACP.”
Well Mr Martin on his own show News One, Roland S. Martin explained that HBCUs admit any race. hey were formed because back in the day America did not legally accept black students. So, they had to create their own schools. The “Historically Black” title was given way later by the U.S. Government to recognize the schools’ place in history. And the NAACP was founded by both whites and blacks.
During Martin’s scathing response to Wendy’s comments on her show, he said, “When you’re on TV and have no idea what you’re talking about, shut the hell up. Don’t open your mouth. Don’t embarrass yourself. Because you sound silly.”
His criticism actually led to Williams inviting him to appear on her show. She got emotional as she apologized for her statements. She told Martin, “Roland help everyone understand why I was so wrong.”
He explained that even though slavery was over that black people were still ‘educationally enslaved’ until the 1940s when they could finally attend any college.
Roland said, “When it comes to our colleges, we couldn’t go to those schools. As a matter of fact, we couldn’t read during slavery. You could be killed if you were found to be reading. So, that’s why it is so critically important. Our institutions are allowing us to survive in America even though we built this country.”
